ZeroTier is a successful startup backed by leading venture capital investors including Bonfire Ventures, Anorak Ventures and First In Capital. Our mission is to directly connect the world’s devices and enable a new era of decentralized computing. We’re gearing up for the next generation of the ZeroTier platform, and we’re looking for a data engineer who can apply strong software development skills, a solid understanding of traditional self-managed database servers and modern cloud-native alternatives, and a deep curiosity in answering important data-driven questions about our services, customers, and systems.
In this role, you'll help build data pipelines, design data warehousing and archival systems, and document the provenance, semantics, and precision of our critical data. You'll report to the Head of Engineering, and work directly with our engineering and go-to-market teams to define, build, and deploy new data pipelines and products.
Our software is installed on millions of devices all over the world, but we collect only as much information as we need to provide services. Our privacy-first approach to data collection means that we need to be smart and creative in our use of what we retain to run the business.
We're particularly interested in candidates who have designed batch and interactive reporting tools, implemented and supported them, and helped to design and operate the data stores underlying them.
Currently, our critical data lives in PostgreSQL, Google BigQuery, and a handful of external APIs (notably Stripe and Matomo). Experience with those tools is strongly preferred, but we also need to address larger-scale event and log analysis. Success in this role will also mean driving the design and implementation of those solutions.
We strive to maintain control of our architecture, uptime, and costs, which means a general familiarity with Linux and cloud systems administration, networking, and troubleshooting are all important to us. We strive to understand the full lifecycle of the systems you design and deploy, not just operate them as opaque boxes that fall to someone else to understand and support.
While this is a remote role located anywhere in the continental United States, preference will be shown to qualified candidates in or near ZeroTier’s operating hubs in Ohio, Oregon and Southern California. We encourage you to apply for this position if you feel you are a match, regardless of location.
